Transforming supply chains for a deforestation-free future: integrating MRV protocol in Colombia's agrifood sectors

Implementing partner: The International Centre for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT)

Consortium partners: Colácteos, OKANTA -Carnatural - Federación de Ganaderos Wayuú - Compañía Nacional de Chocolates

Implementation period: September 2024 - March 2027

Sector: Just Rural Transition

Colombia is committed to achieving zero deforestation in key agricultural supply chains, including cocoa, beef, and dairy. However, tracking and verifying deforestation-free production remains a challenge due to gaps in monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV) systems. This project is designed to address these challenges by developing innovative digital tools, strengthening policies, and promoting sustainable practices.

The project is implementing an MRV system to track deforestation risks and emissions from livestock and agricultural activities. This includes updating the MRV protocol to incorporate gender and social inclusion (GEDSI) considerations, ensuring that small-scale producers, women, and vulnerable communities are actively engaged in sustainable supply chains. Additionally, innovative digital tools such as Ganabosques, GeoFarmer, and Croppie are being integrated to improve data collection, traceability, and transparency.

Through partnerships with key government institutions (Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Environment, and Ministry of Commerce) and private sector allies, the project is working to institutionalize the MRV system as an official national guideline. This will enable better decision-making, enhance environmental responsibility policies, and contribute to Colombia’s climate commitments, including its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the Sustainable Livestock NAMA.

By providing producers with better information, aligning national policies with sustainability goals, and improving transparency in supply chains, this project is helping to create a stronger and more sustainable future for Colombia’s agricultural sector.

"This project is transforming how Colombia monitors and reduces deforestation in key agricultural supply chains. By combining real-time data, government engagement, and digital tools, we are making sustainability measurable and achievable. Farmers, companies, and policymakers now have the information they need to take action, ensuring that production grows without harming forests. This is a critical step toward a future where agriculture and environmental conservation go hand in hand."
