Kenya stands at a pivotal moment in its environmental journey, as the urgent need to restore degraded landscapes and strengthen climate resilience takes centre stage. UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) is proud to support transformative forest and landscape restoration efforts, bringing together government institutions, research bodies, and conservation organisations to drive sustainable solutions.
One of our projects in Kenya, led by the Centre for International Forestry Research and World Agroforestry (CIFOR-ICRAF) in collaboration with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), Kenya Forest Service (KFS), and the Taita Taveta and Makueni County Governments, is laying the foundation for large-scale adoption of Nature-based Solutions to reverse land degradation. This project focuses on enhancing sustainable forest and landscape restoration through a holistic, multi-stakeholder approach.
During a recent stakeholder dialogue, Governor Andrew Mwadime of Taita Taveta County reaffirmed his strong support for the initiative, underscoring the county’s commitment to integrating forest and landscape restoration into long-term development planning. His endorsement highlights the growing recognition that sustainable land management is not just an environmental imperative, but an economic and social necessity.

By aligning efforts at the national and county levels, Kenya-UK PACT and its partners are ensuring that restoration plans are not just theoretical frameworks but actionable blueprints for implementation. The UK PACT-supported project focuses on three critical areas to drive meaningful progress:
Data-driven restoration planning – Through advanced spatial analysis, the project is identifying priority landscapes for restoration, ensuring that interventions are targeted and effective. CIFOR-ICRAF, in collaboration with KEFRI and KFS, is using cutting-edge research and technology to map degraded areas, assess restoration potential, and provide evidence-based recommendations to policymakers.
Scaling up nature-based solutions – A key objective of this initiative is to facilitate large-scale adoption of agroforestry and sustainable land-use practices. By working closely with farmers, community organisations, and local institutions, the project is helping to implement reforestation efforts, introduce climate-smart agricultural techniques, and promote land-use models that balance conservation with economic productivity.
Strengthening governance and policy alignment – Effective forest and landscape restoration requires strong governance frameworks and policy coherence. This project is actively working with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry, as well as county governments, to integrate restoration strategies into national climate action plans, land-use policies, and investment roadmaps.
From plans to adoption: Building lasting impact
A central focus of this initiative is ensuring that restoration efforts are not just pilot projects, but scalable solutions that can be adopted at county and national levels. UK PACT’s support enables actors in Kenya’s restoration sector to:
The endorsement from Governor Mwadime, alongside the commitment of key institutions such as CIFOR-ICRAF, KEFRI, and KFS, reflects a growing momentum towards mainstreaming restoration into Kenya’s climate and economic agenda.
At UK PACT, we believe that collaboration, innovation, and local leadership are the pillars of a sustainable future. By supporting this work, we are investing in a resilient, green, and prosperous Kenya — one where people and nature thrive together.
