Improving MRV capabilities on carbon accounting from forest Degradation to support REDD+ jurisdictional programs

Led by: Instituto de Pesquisa Ambiental da Amazônia (IPAM)
Implementation period: April 2023 - August 2024
 Sector: Nature

Meeting MRV standards is essential for Amazon states to access green finance. The project supported the development of MRV tools to measure and monitor changes in forest carbon stocks due to deforestation and degradation that meet the necessary MRV standards. The project's objective was to increase the autonomy and strengthen the capacity at sub-national and national jurisdictional scales to accurately measure, report, and verify GHG emission reductions and removals from deforestation and mostly from forest degradation, meeting excellence standards in accessing climate finance resources.

It aimed to increase the capacity of Amazon state governments and subnational groups in understanding and attending MRV standards for REDD+ projects at a jurisdictional level, focusing on developing protocols and using MRV tools for measuring and monitoring changes on forest carbon stocks due to deforestation and degradation. These tools are fundamental to set priorities and contribute to the implementation of their action plans to reduce the GHG emissions associated with these processes.

“Our project helped to provide data and analysis that supported the Amazon states on improving their decision on what to use for MRV and jurisdictional REDD+.”

Main results

  • Development of a MRV protocol to quantify the emissions from deforestation and degradation in savannas and forest formations.

  • Improvements to a pre-existing MRV web-tool (CCAL) were made in order to make MRV data and results available for the targeted states. Through workshops, meetings and seminars we showcased the tool to not only the states we wanted to support but also to stakeholders and other relevant organisations involved in the jurisdictional REDD+ in Brazil.

  • Liason with Amazon states representatives and other stakeholders along to hold more than 20 meetings online, 10 in-person meetings, and three in-person workshops.
