Unlocking private investment in commercial forestry to deliver on Kenya’s climate strategy

Led by:  Gatsby Africa
Sector:  Nature

“Commercial Forestry is the ideal route to create more employment, deal with climate change and has been showcased in various locations.” - H.E. Wilber Ottichilo, Governor, Vihiga County CoG, Chairperson, Environment and Climate Change Committee

This project aims to deliver accelerated action on climate change mitigation through increased scale and productivity of commercial forestry in Kenya. It will address key enabling conditions to catalyse private investment in the sector, from private tree growing to public plantations and value addition. Collaborating with the government, private sector, and community associations, the project aims to develop the commercial forestry sector vision. It also focuses on reviewing the sector's PPP framework for sustainable management of public plantations and associated regulations. Additionally, it seeks to catalyse private landowners' investment in commercial forestry and stimulate demand for sustainable timber in high-employment manufacturing sectors by incentivising value chain efficiency investments.
