This skill-share supported Indonesia’s state energy company, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), in implementing their Diesel Replacement Programme (DRP). The DRP aims to replace 5,200 diesel-fired power plants in rural areas with Solar Photovoltaic and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), as part of their move towards net zero by 2060. PLN are exploring hydrogen as a component of the programme however, hydrogen is commercially immature in Indonesia and PLN have limited knowledge of the technology.
This skill-share aimed to support PLN’s hydrogen ambitions by providing hydrogen expertise and technical advice to PLN staff on the technology, suitability, as well as its readiness for the Indonesian market. Specifically, experts discussed and delivered recommendations on the technical considerations of working with hydrogen and how it might be used for mini grids. They conducted technical analysis to develop simulations of hydrogen interaction with mini grids on a model of a remote Indonesian island. They produced a report on renewable energy and green hydrogen options, and determined optimal system configurations of decentralised green hydrogen and BESS in the region. The experts also modelled a geothermal system configuration based on PLN’s planned geothermal power development in Mt Sirung. At PLN’s request, the experts delivered an in-person workshop to their stakeholders to share international best practice experience and lessons learnt from the course of the skill-share.
The experts also incorporated GESI into the skill-share by designing training that was accessible, inclusive, and promoted diversity and equal opportunity. They designed inclusive materials and provided a diverse team from different ages and cultures. Moreover, they facilitated open and collaborative discussions by being clear on the impact electrification has on human health. Experts also supported social groups in addition to the support provided for PLN to decarbonise mini grids whilst still providing reliable power to isolated social groups.
UK PACT (Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions) is a unique capacity-building programme. Jointly governed and funded by the UK Government’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) through the UK's International Climate Finance, it works in partnership with countries with high emissions reduction potential to support them to implement and increase their ambitions for tackling climate change.
