Strengthening the REDD+ National Policy and its benefit-sharing programme in Ecuador

Led by: Global Green Growth Institute
 Implementation period: February 2025 - December 2026
 Sector: Nature (AFOLU)

The project addresses identified barriers and expands Guyana's REDD+ Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification System (MRVS), to enhance the country’s climate change mitigation capacity. This will be achieved by supporting accurate and timely data generation and reporting for informing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), improving transparency while attracting international support and climate finance.

It also seeks to deliver long-term environmental and social benefits through targeted measures that expand the scope and enhance the MRVS' robustness while strengthening key stakeholders' capacities.

National focus of the project includes the Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) sectors, tracking Policies and Measures (PaMs) as well as NDCs, engaging a wide array of key stakeholders through capacity strengthening intervention, and will include inter alia government agencies as well as indigenous, coastal farming and those communities located around mangrove rich areas, with a nationwide geographical coverage across the country. The project goal is expanding the MRVS to better inform decisions and develop data-driven policy options, including in emerging ecosystem areas.

Main counterparts of this project are:

  •  Guyana Forestry Commission (GFC); Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC)

Expected outcomes

  • Institutional capacities strengthened across eight mapped stakeholder entities to effectively implement an Enhanced Transparency Framework
  • Strengthened MRVS to enable data-driven reporting and policy options and progress toward NDCs commitments.
  • Institutional arrangements in place for coordinating, standardize reporting and communicating progress on climate actions/ NDCs progress.
