Fruits of the forest: Just rural transition through bioeconomy products

Colombia is one of the world's most biodiverse countries, but deforestation, unsustainable agricultural practices, and limited market access for sustainable products threaten forest conservation. The project aims to support a just rural transition by fostering sustainable bioeconomy practices, particularly through Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) such as Açaí, Camu Camu, Copoazú, and Corozo. These are products which have growing demand in international markets, but producers face challenges in production efficiency, traceability, and access to fair markets.

This project seeks to bridge those gaps, improving governance, sustainability, and economic opportunities for local communities. It also promotes a sustainable bioeconomy by enhancing the production, processing, and commercialization of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) in Colombia. It works with producers’ associations in Caquetá, Putumayo, and Cesar to improve agroforestry practices, ensure traceability, and foster access to national and international markets.

The project focuses on capacity building, applied research, and market-driven product development. Additionally, it implements governance models that align with deforestation-free commitments, gender equality, and inclusive business practices, ultimately improving the economic and environmental resilience of rural communities.

"This project redefines territorial development by demonstrating that sustainable economic growth and environmental conservation can go hand in hand. By strengthening the Fruits of the Forest value chains, it empowers local communities to build resilient economies, rooted in biodiversity and sustainable practices. More than just creating market opportunities, it fosters a cultural shift—one where social inclusion, forest preservation, and economic prosperity are interconnected, leading to long-term environmental awareness and a reduction in deforestation."
