Leveraging carbon and market incentives to positively transform the livestock sector in Colombia

Implementing partner: Corporación GANSO Servicios Técnicos
Consortium partner: Climate Focus - The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA)
 Sector: Just Rural Transition
 Implementation period: September 2024 - March 2027

The project operates in regions where livestock farming is a vital economic activity, such as the Caribbean Coast, Magdalena Medio, and Orinoquía. However, producers in these areas face significant challenges in improving both their productivity and sustainability. These issues include low adoption of technical knowledge, high participation of intermediaries in the value chain, and barriers to access to credit and formal markets for small-scale producers.

By supporting small and medium livestock farms to obtain the Aval GANSO, a best practices standard and tool to promote continuous improvements at farm level towards sustainable low-carbon livestock production, the project aims to address various problems encountered by livestock producers. It implements several actions to address existing challenges:

Field training: The project organises events to share experiences related to sustainable livestock, environmental practices, and the carbon program. This initiative promotes the exchange of knowledge at municipal, regional, and national levels.

Technical support: Producers receive assistance from the initial phases of socialization and diagnostic visits through to follow-up and recommendations for effective implementation. This support emphasizes social inclusion and gender considerations.

"The project will promote the vertical integration of the value chain, seeking incentives that facilitate more and better livestock production  under sustainability guidelines."

Vertical integration of the meat chain: By establishing direct connections between large-scale farms and the project’s small and medium-scale producers, the project aims to reduce intermediation and informality. This approach increases profit margins and ensures traceability and deforestation-free practices on participating farms.

Sustainable practices: With the guidance of the Aval GANSO and support from the GANSO Technical Team, the project promotes the implementation of sustainable practices on farms. The goal is to enhance management and increase productivity to access formal markets and potentially generate income through mechanisms like carbon markets.
