Building opportunities for sustainable growth in the Ecuadorian Amazon and Loja

Led by: United Nations Development Programme
 Implementation period: May 2025 - March 2027
 Sector: Nature (AFOLU)

The project aims to catalyse Ecuador's transition towards deforestation-free production by strengthening national regulatory frameworks and empowering local producer organisations to implement efficient coffee, cocoa and livestock value chains in the Amazon Region and the Loja province (Highlands Region). The project will drive at least 17% overall progress of the National Strategy for Deforestation-Free Production targets, through the following axes: 1) Transformation of sustainable production chains; 2) Policies, regulations and institutional framework (Monitoring and Evaluation included - MRV); 3) Market Access and Partnerships.

Main counterparts of this project are:

  • Ministry of Environment, Water and Ecological Transition (MAATE)
  • Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock
  • Agrocalidad

Expected outcomes

  • Increased efficiency in coffee, cocoa, and livestock production systems that implement sustainable technologies through reductions in emissions intensity.
  • Strengthened national framework for deforestation-free production through AI-enhanced digital forest monitoring systems, improved regulations and legal land ownership.
  • Economic benefits generated for producers that promote and implement sustainable agricultural technologies.
