Making Indonesia climate action deliver through environmental democracy

Led by:  Westminster Foundation for Democracy
Sector:  Low-carbon policy
The project will focus on strengthening the roles of the Indonesian Parliament in raising the ambition of Indonesia’s climate action commitments and delivery of the nationally determined contribution (NDC) targets by:
  • Building its capacity to develop legislative products that are evidence-based, inclusive, and climate responsive.
  • Improving its capacity to implement green budgeting and green oversight principles on public spending in adherence with climate action strategies.
  • Enhancing its capacity to conduct robust oversight of the government’s green growth agenda implementation, including through regulatory impact assessment and post-legislative scrutiny of legislations with potential and observed negative impact on the environment.

“This project comes at a pivotal moment as Indonesia seeks to enhance its contribution to global climate action strategy. It aims to raise the ambition of Indonesia’s climate action strategy by optimising Parliament’s roles in legislating laws that are responsive to climate change and environmental problems, overseeing policies and scrutinising government budgets to comply with international standards and best practices.”
