This project is helping accelerate Malaysia’s transition to a low carbon economy by shifting financing to sustainable sectors that are compatible with a 1.5C degree future. It is a whole-of-industry initiative which aims to build the capacity of the financial sector towards a low carbon and nature-positive economy. Through multi-stakeholder engagement, it is providing technical assistance and strategic recommendations in climate finance to key stakeholders in the financial sector. The project beneficiaries are the key players in in Malaysia including the Central Bank of Malaysia (Bank Negara Malaysia), Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3) members, and financial institutions.
The climate portfolio alignment exercise of financial institutions conducted by the project is among the first of its kind in the country. It is enabling banks to assess their financing portfolio alignment against climate goals and helping them set pathways to achieve those goals.
“We thank Malaysia-UK PACT for the opportunity to support key initiatives of the central bank, JC3, VBIAF working groups, and major banks towards repositioning Malaysia as a 'sustainability first nation'.”
- Thiaga Nadeson, Head of Market and Education, WWF-Malaysia
